Jason Petty (aka Propaganda) has never been afraid to take on controversial topics. His music is equal parts hip-hop, spoken word, and cultural criticism. For Petty, art and activism go hand in hand.

Music has this ability to sit above the fray and point at the fray, whether it’s an indictment or it’s a comfort, either way, culture has pushed us to a point where we can’t be neutral.

On his new album, Crooked, Petty discusses everything from racism to immigration to gentrification. However, he’s not just pointing the finger at everyone else. Along with revealing broken systems, Petty also confesses his own cynicism, biases, and hypocrisies.

Ultimately, Petty is highlighting the complexity of human nature—the good and bad that lives in all of us. “Life is not a comic book,” he says on “Made Straight.” “There are no perfect victims or villains. Just us.”

In contrast with the more experimental feel of his last album, Crooked finds Petty going back to his hip-hop roots. The album opener, “Crooked Ways,” is almost seven minutes of rap that challenges and confronts listeners with hard truths. Yet, six songs in, Petty is still innovating with his sound and lyrics. The album features collaborations with many other musicians and singers, who bring indelible hooks and melodies. “I Hate Cats,” one of the lighter moments on the album, layers a spoken word poem over a driving beat.

Crooked takes listeners on a journey through the different emotions that come with becoming more aware of the problems in the world and in ourselves. It moves through anger, cynicism, sadness, and ultimately lands in a hopeful place. “We’re crooked sticks making straight lines,” Petty says.

Crooked is Propaganda’s first vinyl release. And vinyl is the perfect medium for an album this rich with meaning. With this special release, you can make sure to catch every innovative beat and every powerful turn of phrase.
